RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade para touros da raça Nelore em três regiões diferentes. As características analisadas foram o peso aos 420 dias de idade (P420) e a idade ao primeiro parto (IPP) de animais criados em regime de pasto. As informações utilizadas no estudo foram referentes a média fenotípica das fêmeas, filhas dos dez melhores touros classificados com base em uma região. Para avaliar os parâmetros de adaptabilidade e a estabilidade foram utilizadas as metodologias propostas por FINLAY & WILKINSON (1963) e EBERHART & RUSSELL (1966). As médias estimadas pelos métodos dos quadrados mínimos foram de 243,91±34,90kg e 1182,54±157,82 dias, respectivamente, para as características P420 e IPP. Os parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade para a característica P420 mostraram que é possível identificar os touros com comportamento previsível nos diferentes ambientes e que poderão gerar progênies com desempenho acima da média. O comportamento dos dez touros analisados nas diferentes regiões estudadas para as características P420 e IPP, evidenciaram que os rebanhos e as regiões influenciaram na performance de suas progênies. Por meio das metodologias aplicadas é possível identificar touros com adaptabilidade geral, alta estabilidade e com melhores desempenhos, os quais seriam os mais adequados a se utilizar em rebanhos em que não se conhece o mérito genético das vacas e nem o ambiente onde serão criadas as progênies.

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to estimate adaptability and stability parameters for Nellore bulls in 3 different regions. The traits analyzed included the weight of the animals raised in pasture at 420 days of age (W420) and at the age at first calving (AFC). The information used in this study was related to the phenotypic mean of the females which were the offspring of the top ten classified bulls based in one region. We used the methods proposed by Finlay & Wilkinson (1963) & Eberhart and Russell (1966) in order to evaluate the parameters of adaptability and stability of these animals. The averages estimated by the method of least squares were 243.91±34.90 kg and 1182.54±57.82 days, respectively, for the traits W420 and AFC. Adaptability and stability parameters for the W420 characteristic showed that it is feasible to identify bulls with predictable behavior in different environments, and that these animals may generate progenies which may achieve above-average performance. Behavior of the 10 bulls analyzed in the different regions studied for the traits W420 and AFC showed that the herds and the regions influenced the performance of their progenies. The methods used allowed us to identify bulls with general adaptability, high stability, and better performances, which may be the most suitable to be used in herds in which the genetic merit of the cows and the environment where the progenies will be raised are both unknown.

ABSTRACT Environmental effects and genetic parameters were estimated for weights at 365 and 550 days for Nellore cattle raised in the Parana State. Least Squared Means methodology, was used to estimate environmental effects. The model included as fixed effects year and month of birth calf, sex and age of dam at calving as a covariate and error as random effects. The variance components were estimated using an animal model considered as fixed effects contemporary group and age of dam. As random effect were composite of direct and maternal genetic additive effects and permanent environment. The genetic trends for direct and maternal effects were estimated by the regression of annual breeding value means on the animals’ year of birth. The heritability were 0.24±0.03 and 0.35±0.05 for direct genetic effect and 0.08±0.03 and 0.03±0.04 for maternal heritability for weights at 365 and 550 days, respectively. The genetic trends of the direct and maternal effects were 0.506 kg/year and -0.184 kg/year for weights at 365 days; and 0.712 kg/year and 0.187 kg/year for weights at 550 days. The results indicate the existence of adequate genetic variability to enable successful selection of breeding stock and realization of genetic gain.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de meio e estimar os parâmetros e tendência genética para peso aos 365 e 550 dias de animais da raça Nelore criados no estado do Paraná. Utilizou-se do método dos quadrados mínimos, incluindo os efeitos fixos de ano, mês de nascimento, sexo e a co-variável idade da vaca ao parto (linear e quadrática). Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados utilizando-se um modelo animal que continha os efeitos aleatórios genéticos direto e materno, de ambiente permanente e o erro; além do efeito fixo de grupo contemporâneo e da co-variável idade da vaca ao parto. A tendência genética foi obtida por meio de análise de regressão linear do valor genético do animal sobre o ano de nascimento. As herdabilidades diretas foram 0,24±0,03 e 0,35±0,05; as herdabilidades maternas foram 0,08±0,03 e 0,03±0,04, para peso aos 365 e 550 dias, respectivamente. As tendências genéticas direta e materna foram 0,506 kg/ano e -0,184 kg/ano para P365; e 0,712 kg/ano e 0,187 kg/ano para P550. Os resultados indicam a existência de variabilidade genética o que possibilitam ganhos através de seleção.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a possibilidade de a característica habilidade de permanência no rebanho de matrizes ser utilizada como critério de seleção na raça Canchim. A habilidade de permanência no rebanho foi definida como a probabilidade de uma matriz ter três partos ou mais até os 76 meses de idade, desde que ela tenha tido a oportunidade de se reproduzir pelo menos uma vez. Codificações binárias, com 0 para indicar fracasso e 1 para indicar sucesso, foram feitas para cada fêmea. Uma codificação alternativa, com quatro categorias, considerou os valores 0, 1, 2 e 3, respectivamente, para vacas com menos de três, com três, quatro ou cinco partos até os 76 meses de idade. As análises foram processadas pela aplicação de um modelo unicaracterístico de touro avô-materno. Utilizou-se a amostragem de Gibbs para estimar os componentes de variância e herdabilidades. As estimativas de herdabilidade foram de 0,07, para a característica definida pelo modelo binário, e de 0,08, para a característica definida pelo modelo com quatro categorias. Os resultados indicam pequenas diferenças na estimativa de herdabilidade, pelos modelos binário e com quatro categorias. Sugerem também que as estimativas de herdabilidade, para a característica habilidade de permanência, na raça Canchim, apresenta baixo potencial de resposta à seleção.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of using the stayability of beef cows as selection criterion for the Canchim breed. Stayability was defined as the probability of a beef cow having three or more parities up to 76 months of age, given that she have calved at least once and was older than 76 months. Binary coding, with 0 indicating failure and 1 indicating success, was defined for each cow. An alternative coding, with four categories, used the values 0, 1, 2 and 3, respectively, for cows with less than three, three, four or five parities up to 76 months of age. The analises were perfomed with a single-trait sire and maternal grandsire model. Gibbs sampling was used to estimate variance components and heritabilities. The estimated heritability was 0.07 for the binary trait and 0.08 for the trait with the four categories. The results indicate small diferences in the estimated heritability for the binary and four-category models. They also suggest that the stayability in Canchim breed presents low potential for response to selection.
